The Concentric Circle project is a testament to Peng's belief that a home should be a haven for the family, a place that unites and fosters interaction and communication between its members. The design draws inspiration from the concept of concentric circles, using it to interpret spatial movement and link family boundaries.
At the heart of the design is the living room, which serves as the center of the circle. The space is designed to create a family centripetal force, with the half-circle design on both sides of the TV wall symbolizing the embrace and care of the family. The open-style living space uses glass sliding doors to define spatial attributes, allowing for flexible use according to the residents' needs. This design takes into account both functionality and interaction, a testament to Peng's innovative approach to interior design.
The Concentric Circle project was realized using a design of concentric circles to link all the spaces. The half-wall design and glass sliding doors open up the vision of the space, with the living room with TV placed in the center of the apartment to solve the problem of sunlight reflecting on the TV during the day. This strategic placement also allows natural light to reach the study by the window.
The entire apartment, which measures 198.3 square meters, features four bedrooms with balconies, a study, a living room, a kitchen, and a dining room. The design team used Benjamin Moore zero-formaldehyde, zero-PVOC latex paint to keep formaldehyde below 0.04 in the whole apartment. The use of Taiwan-made system furniture and kitchenware was also a conscious decision to reduce the footprint of transportation.
The Concentric Circle project faced several challenges, including balancing the different style preferences and living habits of the family members and coordinating the different elements in the space. However, through transforming the layout, reinterpreting the spatial scale and boundaries, and using penetrating materials and lines to extend the visualization of the space, the design team was able to create a space that unites family connections.
In conclusion, Ching Hsiang Peng's Concentric Circle project is a shining example of innovative interior design that prioritizes family interaction and communication. The project's recognition with the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022 is a testament to Peng's creativity and ingenuity in the field of interior design.
